Steps to check if Facebook is down!

Posted by Chad on November 13th, 2010 3:05 PM

Here are a few basic steps you can follow to make sure Facebook is really down and the problem is not with your computer or internet connection.

Step 1: Check this website

  1. Add this website to your favorites and verify if other users in your country/city are having any issues with Facebook.

Step 2: Try different websites

  1. If you cannot connect to other websites chances are you are having computer/internet problems.  Try rebooting your computer, modem and router.  If this doesn’t fix the issue you should probably call your internet service provider.

Step 3: Call a friend

  1. If you know someone that is using the same internet service provider give him/her a call to see if they can connect to Facebook.

Step 4: Ping

  1. Send out a ping command to see if the Facebook server is responding.
    1. Click on start, run and type CMD, this will open a black window.
    2. Type ping Facebook.com. You should see results like the following

Pinging Facebook.com [69.63.181.12] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 69.63.181.12: bytes=32 time=104ms TTL=242
Reply from 69.63.181.12: bytes=32 time=102ms TTL=242
Reply from 69.63.181.12: bytes=32 time=111ms TTL=242
Reply from 69.63.181.12: bytes=32 time=112ms TTL=242

  1. If the ms results are very high there is an issue with either your computer, the route in between or the destination.

Step 5: Name Resolution

  1. Send out a nslookup command to see if you can resolve the Facebook.com into its IP address.
    1. Click on start, run and type CMD, this will open a black window.
    2. Type nslookup Facebook.com.  You should see results like the following

Server:  ns.yourisp.com

Address:  24.222.0.33

Non-authoritative answer:
Name:    Facebook.com
Addresses:  69.63.189.16, 69.63.181.12, 69.63.189.11

  1. If you do not get a similar reply, you are probably having issues with your local DNS cache or your ISP’s DNS.  You should try clearing your cache to see if this resolves the issue.  After performing this command try connecting to Facebook, if the website is still not loading you can try calling your internet provider to setup their DNS server addresses on your computer or to see if they are having issues with their DNS server.
    1. To clear your cache you need to click on start, run and type CMD, this will open a black window.
    2. Type ipconfig /flushdns .  You should see results like the following

Windows IP Configuration

Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.

Thank you very much for your help. It really works. I did what you told us to do and it fixed my problem. I just realized that it was my computer who created the problem. Thanks again.
